Gorgeous Photos Taken by Google Street View Cameras

Google's Street View camera cars can sometimes capture unbelievable landscapes and moments, as Pittsburgh-born photographer Aaron Hobson discovered when scouting for locations around Los Angles using Google Street View for a new project. After getting addicted to Google Street View, Hobson began exploring other places around the globe for amusement. Soon he had amassed a collection of Street View shots of the loneliest and most isolated places on earth.

"After hours and hours of driving through empty countrysides, tundras, and deserts, I began to put together a dozen or more locations that matched my aesthetic appeal and narrative. I decided to turn my gaze outward at the world and the isolation of other people and places through the Google technology. This process is about the amazing technology of Google Street View and the places it has allowed anyone with a computer and internet access to explore. I am trying to share remote locations of splendor and beauty, places of isolation where life is difficult and slower being so far removed from large societies."

"The first hint that they’re not his photos is that when you take a closer look, you realize that any faces captured in these photos are blurred out”, writes Nancy Messieh on TheNextWeb. “Aaron is simply curating these photos, taken by the mechanical eye of Google Street View cars.”

Jackson doctor Conrad Murray sentenced to four years

Conrad Murray, the US doctor convicted of the involuntary manslaughter of pop superstar Michael Jackson, has been sentenced to four years in county jail.

Murray was found guilty earlier this month after a six-week trial.
Judge Michael Pastor told the court that while Murray was legally eligible for probation, he did not think his actions showed he was suitable.

He said the evidence in the case showed a "continuous pattern of lies and deceit" by the disgraced physician.
The legal teams will return in January 2012 to discuss the prosecution's request for Murray to pay restitution to Jackson's family.

While the prosecution successfully argued for the maximum term, Murray's lawyers asked that he be kept on probation, saying he is serving "a lifetime sentence of self-punishment".

Defence lawyer Ed Chernoff said he would already be punished for life by being known as "the man who killed Michael Jackson".

In addition, Murray could still lose his licence to practise medicine.
As the sentencing hearing began, lawyer Brian Panish, a family friend of the Jackson family, read a statement on their behalf.

Expressing their sense of loss for their "son, husband, brother and father", the statement said the court should impose a suitable sentence.

"We respectfully request that you impose a sentence that demonstrates that physicians cannot sell their services to the highest bidder and lose sight of their Hippocratic Oath," Mr Panish read.

In a sentencing memorandum delivered to Judge Michael Pastor in advance of Tuesday's hearing, prosecuting lawyer David Walgren said Murray had shown no remorse for Jackson's death.

Defence lawyers argued that Murray had done a huge service to the community throughout his life, including donating supplies to Caribbean doctors and opening a clinic in the poorest area of Houston, Texas.

"I do wonder though to what extent the court considers the entirety of a man's book of life, as opposed to one chapter," Mr Chernoff said, adding that Murray could better serve the community on probation.

Michael Jackson died on 25 June 2009 from an overdose of the powerful anaesthetic propofol.
He had been out of the public eye for several years but was preparing for a series of comeback performances at the O2 arena in London.

The defence argued that Jackson was a drug addict who caused his own death by giving himself an extra dose of propofol while the cardiologist was out of the room at the star's rented mansion in Los Angeles.

However, lawyers for Murray dropped a key argument midway through the trial - that the pop superstar had drunk the propofol. But they continued to argue that Jackson had somehow dosed himself otherwise.

There is no law against administering propofol, but the prosecution's case rested on the argument that Murray was grossly negligent by doing so outside a hospital setting and without the proper monitoring equipment.

Calling for a four-year prison sentence, Mr Walgren said Conrad Murray had abused the trust placed in him by his patient.

"It is the people's position that prison is warranted."

George Michael in hospital with pneumonia

George Michael has been taken to hospital with pneumonia, his publicist said on Wednesday night.

Michael was said to be receiving treatment in Vienna where he was due to perform as part of his Symphonica tour on Monday. The show was cancelled two hours before it was expected to start.

The 48-year-old has also been forced to postpone dates in Strasbourg and Cardiff, where he was set to appear at the Motorpoint Arena this weekend.

In a statement, Michael's publicist Connie Filippello said he had been "diagnosed with pneumonia and he is currently receiving treatment". She added new tour dates would be scheduled "when available".

Austria's state broadcaster said the singer was at Vienna's AKH hospital.

Michael announced the 65-show tour of Europe in May - three years after he said he would quit live performance.

At the time, the singer - who spent a month in prison for drug driving last year - told a press conference at the Royal Opera House in London: "I felt very re-energised after my recent troubles, I felt it was really what I want to do as an artist."

It is not the first time the singer has cancelled dates in the tour.

He pulled out of appearing at the Royal Albert Hall on October 26 when he suffered a viral infection and high temperature.

Earlier this month, Michael performed for Sir Elton John's Aids Foundation at the Royal Opera House in London.

Stars including Sir Elton, David Walliams and Kylie Minogue attended.

Max de Esteban’s Photos of Deconstructed Gadgets

At first glance these images look like X-Ray’s, but they are not. Barcelona-based artist Max de Esteban meticulously took apart different gadgets like camera, cassette player and typewriter layer by layer, shot them and photographically reassembled them in his latest project Proposition One. The result is retro-chic, x-ray-like artworks displaying an evocative look into the inner workings and complex designs of these devices.

Max de Esteban’s Proposition One is on display at Klompching Gallery, New York City from November 3rd through December 9th.

Single Stroked Spiral Illsurations

In order to demonstrate their Artist Pen’s precision and control, Faber Castell hired Singapore-based designer Chan Hwee Chong to create meticulous spiral drawings of three great masterpieces using their pens. He has recreated Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Van Gogh's self-portrait and Johannes Vermeer's the Girl with the Pearl Earring with a single stroke.

“As you can imagine, every mistake meant we need to start all over again. This project not only involved skill but lots of resilience and patience, much like a spider spinning its web,” the 33-year-old artist said. Mr Hwee Chong added: 'It wasn't as easy as we thought. We went through many rounds of trial and error, painstaking drawing the masterpieces in one controlled line, by hand.”

Urine Soaked Boiled Eggs: A Chinese Delicacy

As spring sets in, a strange but familiar smell permeates the air in Dongyang City of China’s Zhejiang Province, as locals begin to eat the seasonal "virgin egg." It’s the smell of urine, because "virgin eggs" are actually eggs boiled in the urine of virgin boys. The local word is Tongzi Dan which translates to “boy egg”. This bizarre street eat, though appalling to an outsider, has been a standard street fare in Dongyang for hundreds of years.

The process for making Tongzi Dan boiling the eggs in urine. After being brought to a boil in the steaming urine, the eggs are removed, their shells are cracked and they are placed back into the boiling urine to soak up flavor.

Residents of Dongyang love it. "It's so delicious that I can eat 10 eggs a day," said a woman who moved to Dongyang several years ago However, not all Dongyang people are interested in them. One local resident, said he had never tasted "virgin eggs." "I can't stand the smell. It's awful."

The urine is collected from local elementary schools. Plastic buckets are placed outside their classrooms and young boys are instructed to pee into them. The buckets are then collected through the day and used to make the delicacy. For the most part, the practice is accepted throughout primary schools in Dongyang and teachers even remind the boys not to use the buckets if they are sick.

Locals believe that the eggs have medicinal value. Urine contains a kind of crystal that can "diminish the internal heat of the human body" and stop bleeding. But Huang Jian, the chief urology physician of Jinhua Central Hospital, contested that there is nothing good for people's health to be found in the urine. "After all, it is waste from the body," he said.

Kandovan: An Iranian Village Carved in the Rocks

Tucked away in the remote northwest corner of Iran is the village of Kandovan that is not only famous for its scenic beauty, but also for the unique dwellings of its residents. Many of its homes have been made in caves located in cone-shaped, naturally formed compressed volcanic ash formations that make the landscape look like a gigantic termite colony. Current residents of Kandovan claim that their village is more than 700 years old. It was created when those fleeing the advancing Mongol army took to the caves to hide. The homes are known as "karan" in the local Turkic dialect, a word that roughly translates as the plural of beehive.

Over the years, the people of the village have expanded their residences. Now, most cave dwellings range from two to four stories complete with living areas, a storage room and an animal shelter. Many have porches, windows, doors and stairwells carved into the rock. The caves are also some of the most energy efficient homes on Earth, with the rock providing adequate insulation to keep the interiors comfortable throughout the long cold season. The homes also remain cool in the summer.

If you wish to visit this unique village, it is located in Iran's East Azerbaijan Province, 60 km south of the provincial capital Tabriz in Osku county.
